SJUNG OM STUDENTENS LYCKLIGA DAG!

What's up with Sweden's strange graduation traditions?

Studenten, a somewhat strange graduation ceremony. From white sailor hats to spraying beer from a truck, where did it all come from?

Let's start with the white sailor hats, "studentmössa" in Swedish. They were first worn at the Copenhagen student meeting in 1845, when students from Uppsala, Sweden decided to wear them as a token of recognition. Opinions differ as to who "created" the first studentmössa, but the most known and recognized theory is that the student Gerhard von Yhlen was the one to invented it.

The tradition of riding on the back of trucks while dancing and spraying beer  likely started around 1930. Back then, the means of transportation could be anything from a fancy sportscar to horse and carriage.  VICE describes it as follows:

"[...] a soaking wet cortège of students driving around in a truck. The truck is almost always decorated with a cheeky slogan, accompanied by the smell of stale beer and filled with dancing and shouting students.

Students of Sweden, stay safe, but most importantly, enjoy your weird traditions!

Don't forget to use code STUDENTEN when booking online for 25% off! You will need to show up in your studentmössa, or just show a picture of it. Welcome to Fox in a Box Stockholm, studenter!
